The front of Ryder House underwent major renovation during 2016. The work was undertaken as part of the Alston Townscape Heritage Scheme, with some financial assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It included an overhaul of the roof, repointing the front elevation in lime mortar, replacing downpipes in cast iron, installing new stone sills, replacing all glazing on the ground floor, making good and redecorating all timber on the ground floor, and reinstating decorative finials and console brackets, as featured in the original construction in the 1850s. Last, but not least, our iconic teapot was cracked, so we had a replica made by Errington Reay Pottery at Bardon Mill, where the original one was made back in the late 70s/early 80s.
Following the completion of this renovation, The Top Cafe opened on Friday 24 March 2017.
